Tips for starting your own Collaborative Journal

Ever since our Blog Party about our Collaborative Art Journal Project,
I have been asked for tips on starting a similar project.
I had joined a journal swap about 2 years ago that
was a failed effort.
I really loved the idea though,
and decided to start my own.

First, and most important, I feel
is the people you choose to participate.
I chose 7 women whose work I admired and
whom I knew well enough
and trusted enough to fulfill their obligation.
A lot of trust is involved,
these books become an extension of each soul
who works in them.
The books must be handled with respect...
I emailed each friend with the idea
and the "rules"

My guide lines were pretty simple,
in fact there were no rules for the type of journal or the theme.
The only obligation was to complete a spread (or more)
in the journal and send it off to the next person
by the first of every month.
Yes, a deadline is gravely important.
As the coordinate-tor,
it was my job to gather addresses and organize the mailing list.
We found it easy to send to the same person each month,
just like a big circle.
Each month we would communicate by email.
Our project finished the beginning of November,
perfect timing before the Holidays.
We all enjoyed it so much that we are doing it all over again
With a few changes...
this time we each chose a color as the theme for our books.
And we have a private page on Facebook where we can communicate.
(I don't know how you go about this, that's why it is handy to have a wizard in the group)

So, to re-cap:
Keep the group intimate and trusting.
(8 or 9 committed people)
Organize the rotation and make sure everyone understands the mailing list.
Stick to the deadline.
I cannot tell you how much these women have added to my life,
I feel such a sisterhood with them all.
And getting a beautiful book to work in each month
is exciting and challenging and rewarding.

Let us know if you start your own,
I know we would all love to hear about and see your adventure.
Plus it would make us feel special to know we inspired someone.
I have my list of my Art Sisters and their blogs on my side bar.
I know they would love a visit from you :)
